A disciplined and safe learning environment for all students is the primary goal of Putnam County Schools. Research shows the adoption of dress codes and school uniform policies may promote school safety, improve overall discipline and enhance the school learning climate.

DRY VALLEY SCHOOL DRESS CODE

School Year 2002-2003

School clothing and individual grooming must not detract from the learning environment. All apparel or accessories worn to school may not display or advertise the following:

I. Gang affiliation or gang signs.
II. Tobacco products
III. Profanity
IV Alcoholic products
V. Drugs or drug paraphernalia
VI. Sexual themes
VII. Ethnic groups or signs
VIII. Racist overtures
IX. Satanic signs (death, skulls, etc.)
X. Any other suggestive or offensive sayings or graphics.

DESCRIPTION OF CLOTHING APPAREL

I. PANTS (MALE OR FEMALE)
Pants worn at Dry Valley are to be a traditional cotton khaki -NOT denim : MUST be in tan color ONLY. THERE IS TO BE NO OTHER STYLE OR COLOR. Pants must have belt loops.
1. NO JEANS of any kind; no cargo pants, no SHORT PANTS (NO SHORTS, capri pants, etc.)
2. Must be size appropriate at the waistline; cannot touch the ground or floor. NO OVERSIZED PANTS.
3. Belts are to be worn at all times.
4. No large bell-bottoms, skin-tight or pants that have holes or frayed ends.
5. Pant legs cannot be tucked or bloused.
6. Pants are to be worn at hip or above-NO sagging of any kind.

II. SHIRTS (MALE OR FEMALE)
MALE: White round neck T-shirt ONLY
FEMALE: White round neck T-shirt ONLY; White bra only white under T-shirt.
Plain T-shirts will be allowed - NO SCREENING OR LOGOS OF ANY TYPE.
1. No sleeveless shirts;
2. Must be size appropriate;
3. All shirts must be long enough to be tucked in;
4. Pockets on pants must be partially visible.

III. SHOES
No cowboy boots; no combat boots; no sandals. No shoe with any sole that leaves a black mark on the floor. Tennis shoes are preferred.

IV. HEAD WARE

NO caps, bandannas, toboggans, or “dew rags” of any kind.

V. COATS
Jackets, coats, or other outer garments may be worn to school, but must be hung up during the day. Any coat or jacket worn must not be longer than mid thigh. No long trench coats.

VI. PURSES
Must NOT be larger than 8” x 8”
NO BACKPACKS OF ANY KIND.

VII. HAIRSTYLES

ALL hair color must be natural color tones. No blue, pink, red, green, etc. NO sprayed or dyed in unnatural color. All male students are to keep their hair trimmed above ears and off collar. No spiked hair, mohawk cuts or any extreme style of any kind, including a skin head look for male and female students. No pony tails or dreadlocks for male students

VIII. JEWELRY (MALE OR FEMALE)
1. No visible tattoos
2. No body piercing, with exception of ears (maximum 2 per ear for girls)
3. NO EARRINGS FOR MALE STUDENTS
4. No sunglasses
5. Jewelry must not advertise.
6. Only 2 modest necklaces.
7. No TONGUE RINGS OR SPACERS OF ANY KIND MAY BE WORN.
8. No chains of any kind are to be worn, including neck chains, wallet or belt chains.


IX. FACIAL/BODY MAKE-UP /NAIL POLISH

1. All make-up must be of natural color and moderately applied.

2. Black/white or any gothic look or make-up that suggests death, gang, cult, or Satanism IS NOT
ALLOWED.

3. Male students are not allowed to wear body make-up or nail polish

The Putnam County School Board and Dry Valley School reserves the right to add to or delete from the dress code to help maintain a safe and educational environment.

Attendance Policy

Every effort is made at Dry Valley to provide an environment that is encouraging and positive, as well as educationally beneficial for the student. however, in order for us to be effective, a student has to be in school it is also the law.

Attendance can be a challenge and we will make every effort to work with you However, there is a compulsory attendance policy that governs the county. As stated in that policy “...a student may be absent from school 5 days per semester with only a parent’s written excuse for illness. After 5 days, parents must provide a medical excuse from a certified medical provider or absences could be considered unexcused.”
you will have 2 days to provide the documentation after the child returns to school
.A student who misses over 5 days, without a Dr’s. excuse, may be required to attend truancy board hearing with the parent. A student who misses over 5 days without a Dr’s. excuse at Dry Valley may also be required to make this time up. These makeup days or “time for time” may be after school for on Saturday. It will be the responsibility of the parent to provide transportation and lunch for their child for this makeup time. A note will be sent to the parent informing them when their child has used up the 5 days. A note will also be sent home to inform the parent when their child will have to make up the days, 3 days prior to the time.

Transportation Information

Transportation to Dry Valley on a School Bus is a privilege, not a right. Therefore a student has to comply with All bus rules to and from school

A student is generally given a warning the first time, depending upon the incident. The third time the student will be removed form the transportation system. It then is the responsibility of the parent to transport the child.

Our students have a designated place to stand and wait for the transfer bus to be transported to Dry Valley. They are NOT to Leave this area. They are subject to be arrested for trespassing if found on another school's campus.

A parent can provide transportation to and form school. If so, the student is to be at the school by 7:50 a.m. And can picked up at 2:30p.m.

A student may drive, but they cannot transport another student unless there is a note from both student's parents

Dry Valley School Policies

1. Under no circumstances, are students allowed to Argue, Debate, or Refuse to do as Asked by any staff member, Class A Offense.
2. Students are not allowed to just sit in a classroom and not complete their school work.
3. School starts at 7:55 win.; classes begin at 8:00. Any student that is to be tardy is to call the school office for the tardy to be excuse
4. A parent or guardian must call the school office between 7:45 and 8:15 a.m. if a student is going to be absent that day. Please refer to the compulsory attendance form.
5. Students who carry any weapon (determined by the principal; including , but not limited to: guns, knives, mace, brass knuckles, clubs, etc.) may be arrested and taken to Juvenile Detention.
6. If a student is found with an illegal substance (including, but not limited to alcohol unprescribed drugs, marijuana, etc.), it will be considered an unlawful act and the student will be arrested and taken to juvenile Detention.
7. In most cases, when there is a fight, the Putnam County Sheriffs Department will be called and a police report will be filed. your child may be taken to Juvenile Detention.
8. Sleeping during school hours is strictly prohibited.
9. Students are not to carry any type of tobacco products, lighters, matches, or paraphernalia. Any such items will be confiscated
10. Students are not to use profane or coarse language (i. e., sucks, God etc.), vulgar signs or gestures, gang signs or symbol. written or otherwise.
11. School supplies include two pencils and paper for each class. School supplies are tile responsibility of the parent, not the school Pens are not allowed.
12. Students will be expected to be in class and be seated when the bell rings.
13. Students are not to bring walkman-type radios, compact disc players, cassettes, CDs, videos, cell phones or beepers to school The item(s) will be confiscated
14. Any medication that a student needs will have to be brought to school by the parent/guardian. School board policy will be followed in dispensing it.
15. Students, student lockers, cars, etc., are subject to being searched at the discretion of the staff or principal
16. Students are NOT ALLOWED to bring backpacks, book bags, or book satchels to school.
17. Girls are to leave purses in lockers and are not to bring them to the lunchroom, classroom, or outside during P.E.
18. Students are expected to be courteous and exhibit respect, good behavior and good manners to ward their peers, School staff and adults.
19. Honesty and truthfulness will be expected.
20. Any type of cheating or gambling is prohibited.
21. Good health habits will be promoted.
22. Students are not allowed to mark or cut out tattoos, etc., on themselves, school property, others, or the property of others.
23. Students are not allowed to leave the school building without permission.
24. Students are not to interfere with discussion or the discipline of their peers by adults.
25. Cleanliness of the school campus, restrooms, building, and other areas of use will be emphasized:
26. Students are not to request permission from the teacher to get a pass to the office, unless it is an emergency.
27. Restroom use should be between class changes; not during class time, unless it is an emergency.
28. Hands are to be kept off other students.
29. Gum or candy will not be allowed
30. Loitering, playing, running, or loud talking in the halls, restrooms, classrooms, before, during, or after school will not be permitted:
31. Students will be required to respect school property, as well as the property of others.
32. Students are expected to be neat and clean in appearance and: abide by the dress code of tile school
33. Under no circumstances are students allowed to use the school telephone. Personal business must be handled before and after school hours. Parents/guardians are the only persons who may leave a message for a student.
34. Students are not allowed to ride with other students, unless a note from both sets of parents is brought to school giving permission. This is to be arrange BEFORE school not while at School
35. Due to school safety concerns, no one is allowed on campus without an appointment, the only exceptions will be parents/guardians or other school personnel from the Putnam County Board of Ed:
